Machu Picchu trail open again

Treks and train journeys to Peru’s Machu Picchu are operating again following a series of mudslides near the foot of the lost city.

Train journeys were temporarily suspended over the weekend and several travellers left temporarily stranded but Tucan Travel operations manager Ray Petts said things were returning to normal.

“As a leading Latin America operator, Tucan usually has several tours in the Machu Picchu area at any one time,” he said.

“At the time of the mudslides we had several groups in the area, however, passengers were not in danger at any time and have now returned safely to Cuzco and are continuing to follow their normal itineraries.”

The road and rail tracks had now been cleared and the train journey to Machu Picchu was fully operational, Petts said, although schedules were still a little out.

The Inca Trail is open for those wishing to make the four-day trek.
