$600m Waikiki Beach Walk project launched

7 April 2005

Waikiki Beach Walk, the largest development project to be undertaken in Hawaii’s most high-profile beach area, has been launched with a ground-breaking ceremony.

The USDD460 million ($602.3 million) project scheduled for completion in late 2006 is aimed at transforming a tired and dated area into a new leisure destination.

Almost eight acres on Lewers Street, Beach Walk and Kalia Road close to Waikiki beach will undergo revitalisation designed to create an inviting setting with an array of shops, restaurants and hotels.

Key components include an outdoor entertainment plaza, 40 specialty retailers, two new accommodation properties and the extensive renovation of two existing hotels, four major restaurants and several smaller food and beverage outlets.

The new Embassy Suites Hotel Waikiki Beach Walk will be Hawaii's first all-suite hotel product. The deluxe twin-tower hotel will be created through an extensive renovation of the current Ohana Waikiki Village and Ohana Waikiki Tower hotels.

The 421 suites will include 17 two-bedroom suites, 352 one-bedroom suites, and 52 ‘hotel room suites’.

The new Fairfield Hawaii Resort at Waikiki Beach Walk will comprise 195 deluxe ‘vacation ownership units’ through an extensive renovation of the former Ohana Reef Towers hotel.

The property will include 95 one-bedroom units, 83 two-bedroom units, and 17 two-, three-, and four-bedroom ‘presidential suites’.

The Outrigger Reef on the Beach will be completely renovated to create a full-service resort hotel with some 700 deluxe guest rooms, and new and improved public areas.

The property will remain open for business throughout the entire Waikiki Beach Walk development period.

The 283-room Ohana Islander Waikiki will undergo renovation of its guest rooms and public areas, also remaining open for business throughout the Beach Walk development period.

The master plan for the development also proposes a 350-foot mixed-use tower - the Saratoga Tower - where the Ohana Royal Islander and Ohana Reef Lanai hotels and Malihini and Hale Pua Nui apartments are currently located.
