Comfortable Bed in the Sky

Giving Passengers a Wide - and Flat - Berth

    by Julie Moline

A new breed of seat-beds has been developed by airlines vying to be considered standard-bearers of world-class amenities.

For me, the toughest part of long-haul flights isn't claustrophobia or even boredom: I use the time to catch up on reading, watch movies I missed in theatres, and jot a few hand-written notes. What gets me is not being able to sleep. Even exhausted, even faced with a 17-hour block of time, even lulled by the methodical hum of the engines, I find it tough to sleep in street clothes, and harder still to sleep on my back.

On flights when I'm fortunate enough to be in business class, I find the wide, plush seats extremely comfortable for sitting, especially the ones with footrests and adjustable lumbar support. But I still find them too awkward to sleep in. What I really want is a something perfectly horizontal, so I can curl up in a foetal position and not wake myself up snoring the way I do when I manage to sleep sitting up.

Now I may be in luck. A new breed of seat-beds has been developed by airlines vying to be considered standard-bearers of world-class amenities. Air France and British Airways both have little "pod" clusters in first class, a kind of luxe partitioning that offers passengers a seat that converts into a real bed, more privacy than regular side-by-side configurations, and a few clever amenities to boot: bed sheets, good lighting, and the latest in sound and video equipment.

Asiana Airlines' first class sleeper seat is 83" long, reclines 180 degrees, and features a kind of headboard storage area, handy for glasses, book, and glass of water.

When Qantas redesigned the interiors on its 747-400 aircraft this year, it chose beds that are 6'6" long when fully reclined, and come with ottomans, an entertainment centre, and two foldaway tables, one for dining and one for working.

"The world is going flat," summed up Veronica Lopes, managing director of inflight products for American Airlines. The beds on American's 777 aircraft were so successful when they debuted in March that the airline plans to put them on its transatlantic 767s next year, she said.

One of the most impressive first-class bed concepts comes from Singapore Airways, which spent a considerable amount of time querying business travellers on the best ways to retool its First Class product. High on most road warriors' wish lists was, no surprise, a comfortable bed. The cabin's interior designer, who also created the interiors of the posh Eastern & Orient Express train line, made the seats more like yacht berths, with a retractable desk for working or dining, a stationery drawer with writing paper, postcards and envelopes, a laptop power supply, and a 14-inch fold-away video monitor, the largest private entertainment system in the sky.

As befits a carrier that flies mostly long-haul flights, special attention was placed on seat comfort. They're covered in glove-soft leather, supplied by the same company that outfits Rolls Royce, Ferrari and Jaguar. The seats can be adjusted to several intermediate positions, including the "cradle" (a 127-degree angle of decline) or completely flat (a seat-bed that measures 76 inches by 23 inches). An air mattress embedded in the cushion inflates to even out gaps in the contouring and to provide maximum support when the seat is fully extended. On flights longer than seven hours, the crew will turn the seat-bed into a box-spring of sorts, placing a mattress on top, and making it up with fresh bed linens and a duvet.

Don't have the dosh for first class? British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have both said they'll put flat beds in their business class cabins. Virgin, not to be trumped by its arch rival, announced plans to put in double beds, which are really four-foot-wide mattresses placed atop two regular seats, on the new Airbuses it recently ordered. They will be the "first double bed for business travellers," crowed founder Richard Branson, who winks at the inevitable association with the mile-high club, at least among the guttersnipes in the press. Club members or no, if you're travelling with your significant other, it does seem an improvement over sleeping in chairs separated by a foot-wide plastic armrest. Unless, of course, one of you is snoring.

How to Beat the Flight or Fight Syndrome

  • Travel Voice Tips

I have flown 155,000 miles in the past 12 months. When your home is 9 hours from the first port in Asia, and 14 hours from the first port in the U.S.A. you simply have to have a number of tactics to survive at 35,000 feet and beyond.

Some of us who fly often have a few pretty basic rules which are essential for comfort during and after the journey. I always photocopy my passport, tickets, & vouchers that I need, that way at least if the originals go missing I have reference numbers and all the details. Plenty of water during the flight is mandatory, try and stretch your legs every couple of hours, a clean T-shirt and a pair of track pants in your one piece of carry-on luggage can have you feeling comfortable and relatively fresh for even the longest journey, and keep the "what was that noise" comments to yourself!

Seven points to beat the flight or fight syndrome:

    1. Put "loud" stickers on your luggage. This will help you identify your bags amongst the 500 or so whizzing by on the carousel, and can also prevent other people picking up your bag in error. Best of all, it can deter thieves because it'll be easier to spot. Never put your home address on the luggage tags,(so thieves can't find your house) but rather either a work contact, or better still in this day and age, your e-mail address. Then if your bag does go missing at least you'll be easy to contact no matter where you are.

    2. Most of us want either a window or isle seat. If there are none available when checking in, try asking for a seat between passengers with the same surname. Chances are this lovely couple has asked for the window and isle seats hoping that no-one will be seated between them. You can ask them to swap when your seated, or perhaps read the morning broad-sheet and "need" the bathroom every 20 minutes.

    3. Go light on the liquor. The air is thin in the cabin and booze cuts the oxygen level in your brain even further, you'll get drunk quicker, and have a hangover. It's not fair to the flight attendants or fellow passengers to have to deal with the blithering mess in seat 62K.

    4. If your seat has not been allocated prior to check-in, be an early starter, AT LEAST 2 hours prior to an international flight. With any luck you'll get a bulk-head seat for being prompt and POLITELY asking the check-in staff.

    5. Relax your jaw. A lot of people tend to clench their jaws during turbulent flights. Dr Kenneth Moore of the Chicago Medical School suggests the action can cause headaches. To relax your jaw muscles, move your jaw forward and count to five. Do that about five times every thirty minutes and the tension should be released.

    6. Don't blow to pop your ears. Dr Andrew Goldberg, an otolaryngologist, suggests that to relieve ear pressure, put a hot face-towel in a styrofoam cup and place it over your ear. The steam expands the air in your inner ear and helps it escape. Using a decongestant spray like Sinex or Drixine just before descent will also help you ears pop.

    7. Finally, lucky tip number 7. Call your flight attendant by name, and when you're in need of something, always use the words "when you get a chance, could I have ..." Demanding passengers are a nuisance to the crew and fellow travellers.
